Information dashboards for heterogeneous data in SharePoint
Within enterprises several data sources exist, e.g. CRM, web analytics, time sheets and ERP. They typically live in individual "data silos", with incompatible or partially overlapping schemas. Getting an integrated view of all information that is distributed amongst the various data sources is a challenge. For example it is hard to identify trends and issues if you have to look at each data source individually.
GRASP ("Graph for SharePoint") is the SharePoint solution to create consolidated views, reports and visualizations from heterogeneous data. These so-called information dashboards are tailored views on (multiple) data sources that present the integrated information in a way that is meaningful for business users. An ontology is used to translate non-RDF data sources into semantic data that is hosted by a RDF-store (requires additional software). The integrated data is accessed using the standardized reporting language “SPARQL”. Internal corporate data can be augmented with publicly available data sets (so called Linked Open Data), e.g. geographic information.
Semantic tags are intelligent tags that contain more information than normal SharePoint metadata. For example you can associate the Semantic Tag "Project XY" with information about this project that comes from your project management system, like the project volume. This makes it possible for your users to retrieve documents based on the project volume. Documents that use semantic tags can be enriched with additional information from the semantic data contained in a RDF-store.
Return on Investment
GRASP is a set of quality assured tools for information architects that significantly reduces the efforts to build information dashboards in SharePoint.
